Valor Mortis Nephtoglobin Guide: How the Plague Resource Works

How Nephtoglobin works in Valor Mortis: refilling it with weak-point shots, Ambers that change it, and which skills make your Transmutations sustainable.

Nephtoglobin (the community calls it "nephto") is the supernatural resource that powers William's Transmutations — the plague magic at the center of Valor Mortis's build system. Run dry mid-fight and you lose your best tools. This guide covers how it fills, spends and scales.

How You Fill It

Nephtoglobin refills when you land hits and parries — the bar rewards aggressive, skillful play rather than hiding behind a shield. The fastest refill method is shooting glowing weak points (lambent blisters) on mutated enemies with any firearm. One clean weak-point shot returns a meaningful chunk of the bar.

How You Spend It

Each Transmutation draw consumes the bar:

  • Fire — damage over time, opens enemies to finishers. Your default offensive choice.
  • Stasis — freezes and slows enemies, and moves machinery in puzzles. Essential against the Sphinx.
  • Shield — full blocks against attacks and poison, introduced in the University before The Orphan.

Skills That Matter

In the unified skill tree, prioritize:

  • Nephtoglobin Extraction — more refill per weak-point hit.
  • Nephtoglobin Sufferance — cheaper Transmutation casts.
  • Status Buildup — faster Ignite and Stasis application.

Invest in these early if you plan to lean on Transmutation damage builds like the Spellblade.

Ambers That Change the Game

  • Bottomless Well — slowly regenerates Nephtoglobin over time; found in a chest near the first Lantern.
  • Potent Concoction — your Ferrofluid Flask restores Nephtoglobin along with Health.
  • Bountiful Harvest — Nephtoglobin Remnants also restore Health.
  • Equivalent Exchange — sacrifice Health when the bar runs dry; a panic option.
  • Life Diverted — flasks restore Nephtoglobin instead of Health, with Transmutation damage siphoning Health back. High risk, high tempo.

The Economy Loop

The healthiest loop looks like: weak-point shot (refill) → Transmutation cast (spend) → posture break → finisher. If you find yourself out of Nephtoglobin with flasks down, you are likely blocking too much and shooting too little. Fix the shot discipline first.
